Overview

Located at a height of almost 3, 754 meters, Har Ki Dun Trek is known for its distinct blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, as you not only enjoy stunning views of the Himalayan ranges but also get to experience the local lifestyle of the Garhwal region. The trek passes through several quaint villages, oak and rhododendron forests, waterfalls, grasslands, alpine meadows, rivers, streams, and glaciers. It can be completed in about seven days starting and ending at Haridwar or Dehradun. Named after the Hindu Temple, Har Ki Dun has several legends associated with it. It is believed that this was one of the few places where Lord Krishna had performed his divine dance. The trail takes you through some of the most picturesque villages of the region, such as Osla, Seema, and Taluka. It is ideal for adventure lovers, photographers, as well as nature enthusiasts as it offers breathtaking views of the peaks of the Swargarohini range, Bandarpoonch, and the Black peak.

    DAY 1 : Haridwar/Dehradun to Sankri
    • You will get picked up from your location at either Haridwar or Dehradun.
    • Enjoy the long yet scenic drive to the village of Sankri via Mussoorie, Barkot, Purola, Mori, and Netwar along the Tons River.
    • At the end of the 240 km journey that is covered in almost 10 hours, you can rest for the night in Sankri.
    • Meal includes dinner which will be served in the village of Sankri itself before you retire for the night.

    DAY 2 : Sankri to Osla via Taluka
    • Have an early breakfast at Sankri and set off for Taluka in a cab. This will be the starting point of your trek.
    • Start your 11–15 km easy trek from here that can be covered in approximately 5-7 hours.
    • The trek will take you through a lush green valley that is covered with wild orchids of the Himalayas. As you move out of Taluka village, the trail slightly descends and then continues gradually on the left of the valley.
    • You will then pass through thick forests of chestnuts, walnuts, willows, and other conifer trees, and a few waterfalls as you continue on the trail until you reach Osla village by late afternoon.
    • Enjoy the rest of the day looking at the beautiful architecture at Osla, especially the Duryodhana temple which features a pair of carved peacocks on the top .
    • Spend the night in a guest house/camp at Osla village.

    DAY 3 : Osla to Kalkatiyadhar
    • Start your third day of the Har ki Dun trek with a hike for about 15 minutes, after which you will enter a cleared land, the first of several.
    • Next, take an ascent as the trail takes you over the confluence of the rivers Supin and Ruinsara all the way up to a viewpoint.
    • Once you reach the vantage point, you can look for the majestic peaks of Kala Nag (Black Peak) and Bandarpoonch ranges that will loom far in the distance.
    • Continue on your trail till you reach a flat piece of land. This is at a height of about 8,956 feet at Kalkatiyadhaar.
    • This is your next campsite where you will rest for the night.

    DAY 4 : Kalkatiyadhaar to Har-ki-dun and back
    • Continue on your trek on Day 4 along a valley till the meadows of Dev Thach are clearly visible on your right.
    • You will find the valley divided now with Har-ki-dun on the left and Ruinsara Taal on the right.
    • Once you cross the mountain bend, you can see the Har Ki Dun and Hata Peak in the distance.
    • Continue along the pass through several streams and pine forests. You will also see a variety of Himalayan alpine flowers along its sides.
    • You will come across a small waterfall after about 20 minutes. Next, you will have to embark on a steep climb of about 15 minutes.
    • Find two valleys open up which are divided by the Karmanasha stream. The valley on the left is going to Maninda Taal and the other, to Jaundhar Glacier.
    • Camp for the night in Kalkatiyadhaar.

    DAY 5 : Kalkatiyadhaar to Khangar
    • On the fifth day of your Har ki Dun trek, you will start heading back to the Seema. You will set out on the same route that you took earlier. However, this time the trail goes downhill and is thus much less difficult.
    • Once you reach the Seema campsite, you will stop here to rest and spend the night in tents here.

    DAY 6 : Khangar to Taluka trek
    • On the sixth day of your Har ki dun trek, start off early with a heavy breakfast at your campsite before you set out on your descent.
    • This is going to be a much more easy trek and you will head back on the same route that you had taken to reach here.
    • Once you reach Taluka, you will get a vehicle that will transport you back to your starting point at Mussoorie.
    • The day comes to a close with a hearty dinner in the hotel in Mussoorie.

    DAY 7 : Mussoorie to Dehradun/Haridwar
    • On the final day, start off with an early breakfast at Mussoorie.
    • After breakfast, you will get transport to either Dehradun or Haridwar according to your further schedules.
